Another Missed Sunrise

I realized a few minutes into waiting for the sun to rise that I was facing the wrong way. The window in my office faced almost exactly the wrong direction, in fact. I hadn’t been expecting perfect pastel shades to crest over the horizon behind me, in fact the horizon was blocked by a fence and a few large trees that meant that there was pretty much no chance of me seeing it in the first place, even if I had faced the right direction.
I sat out to watch the stars, but the sun hadn’t set yet. We realized this, and decided to hang out and talk together as we waited for the stars to blink into sight. I don’t think they did, but I can’t be sure, because I closed the door and went back inside to watch television with my mom instead.
If the walls had fallen away, and all the fences and trees surrounding me had vanished, where I sat watching the television would have given me a perfect view of the sun setting over the hills.
